17 - Smeaton Lake Woods

Smeaton Lake Woods Nowadays a beautiful collection of trees in the heart of East Lothian, Smeaton Lake Woods came into being in the 1830s when landowner Sir Thomas Buchan-Hepburn had the boggy ground excavated to create Smeaton Lake.

Successive generations have added to Sir Thomas's early plantings and on the short circular walk visitors can admire exotic trees and flowering shrubs from around the world, as well as wildflowers and seasonal displays including masses of snowdrops early in the year.
