15 - Mount Stuart
The Victorian Pinetum at Mount Stuart was a pioneer of its time and, true to this tradition, the grounds here became the first ’safe site’ for the International Conifer Conservation Programme, an initiative established to help conserve conifers threatened in their native habitats.
At Mount Stuart you can also see wonderful collections of flowering trees and other plants from around the world. During the summer months The Chilean Lantern Tree blooms with hundreds of tiny red lantern-shaped flowers, giving the tree its unusual name.
Towering at over thirty feet, its height is rivalled only by a magnificent 17th century obelisk that stands at the centre of the garden, covered in deeply carved symbols and dials.
